State Motor Vehicle Agencies (DMVs) have very strict policy as far as identifying documentations go before you are issued a learner's permit or driver's license. So, make sure you have all the primary or secondary form of ids on you when you leave home for the DMV test. Internationals, please make sure you have all the legal documents ready for the DMV when you go for the driver's license.
Failure to disclose any information about a previous driver license or presenting any false information or altered documents can result in loss of future driving privileges and/or arrest for fraudulent application
All applicants must provide proof of legal presence in the United States. You can provide any of the following documents as a proof of your legal presence. Click for more information on learner's permit test or driver's license test.
Documents as proof of legal presence
• U.S. Birth Certificate
• U.S. Passport
• U.S. Visa (if you are a foreign national)
• Social Security Card (No metal cards)
• Photo INS document (except Border Crosser)
• Photo Military/ Military Dependent ID
• Naturalization Certificate
Proof of Identity for driver's license or learner's permit
As proof if identity for the DMV license, most states ask you to provide two primary or one primary and one secondary form of ids from the list below. This is a generic list. Always refer to your state's DMV for the exact requirement on the identification documents for learner's permit or driver's license test.
Primary identification documents for learner' permit test
• State issued Photo ID of the state you are currently living in
• Out of State Driver License or State Issued Photo ID (some states may not accept this form of id)
• Birth Certificate (If foreign, must have notarized translation)
• Photo INS Document (except Border Crosser)
• Passport (If foreign, INS Card or U.S. Visa required)
• Naturalization Certificate
• Court Order (Must contain full name, date of birth & court seal)
• Military/Military Dependent Photo ID
• Draft Registration Card
• Armed Forces Discharge Papers
Secondary identification documents for learner' permit test
• Photo Medicaid Card
• Employment or School Photo ID
• Social Security Card (No metal cards)
• Vehicle Registration/Title
• Bureau of Indian Affairs/Indian Treaty Card (No Tribal Cards)
• Marriage License
• Health Insurance Card
• IRS/State Tax Forms (W-2 Form is not acceptable)
• Court Order (Date of birth not present)
• Medical Records (From doctor or hospital)
• Concealed Handgun License
• Certified School Transcript
• Pilot’s License
• Parent’s Affidavit (Parent must appear in person, prove his/her identity and
submit notarized affidavit of child’s identity. Applies to minors only)
• Court Records
• Prison Release Documents
For minor drivers: In addition to proof of legal presence and identification documents, a parent's or legal guardian's signature is required in most states if an applicant is younger than eighteen years of age. The parent/guardian should request Instruction Permit for the applicant and must be willing to assume all legal and financial responsibilities associated with the applicant.
